Economic Vitality Intern
This position is part of a cohort of 10 UVM summer interns working with organizations that support the Brattleboro community, including resettled New Americans, in partnership with the Brattleboro Development Credit Corp and the School for International Training (SIT). The UVM Leahy Institute for Rural Partnerships will fund a stipend of $4,000 per intern and provide housing at the SIT campus in Brattleboro, Vermont.
Revitalization and Redevelopment are central to a thriving downtown. The Downtown Brattleboro Alliance (DBA) accomplishes this work through programming events in underutilized areas, hosting pop-up shops, and keeping our eyes and ears on the pulse of downtown.
Intern Responsibilities:
- Weave together data tools and placemaking strategies that result in community centered economic development.
- Catalog vacant downtown spaces for activation and development using BOOM Tracker property inventory tool
- Meet with local property owners to discuss and document future development possibilities in downtown Brattleboro
- Participate in coordinating site activation programs like Lunch in Lot, Sucka Punch Graffiti Jam, Teen Street, and First Friday.
- Present research and data findings to the Brattleboro Planning Commission
Learning Opportunities
- Work closely with DBA Executive Director and Creative Director to learn about the National Main Street America framework for downtown revitalization
- Implement and evaluate a new property inventory tool
- Interview and converse with community members, gaining insight about development needs and challenges
The BOOMS Tracker is a property inventory tool designed for local Main Street leaders, like DBA. Available on a smartphone the user can easily gather, store, and showcase information about buildings and lots in their districts. It is also a map-centric, national platform for identifying vacant spaces that could serve as opportunities for activation and development. The BOOMS Tracker is a first step towards activating vacant and idle spaces in downtown districts.
